Pediatric dentistry, previously known as Pedodontics, is a dental specialty focused on the oral health of individuals from birth through their teenage years. The American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes this as a specialized area of dentistry, requiring dentists to complete an additional two years of focused education after earning their general dental degree. Successful completion of a Pediatric Dental Residency program results in a Certificate of Pediatric Dentistry. Some of these residency programs also require the completion of a Master's thesis. Bowling Green pediatric dentist Dr. Mandy Ashley completed her Pediatric Dental Residency at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and earned her Master of Science degree with a thesis from The Ohio State University. Some pediatric dentists, like Dr. Ashley, also choose to provide dental care for children and adults with special needs, including individuals with autism, varying levels of physical and/or intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, cleft lip and palate or craniofacial syndromes, and other unique healthcare needs.
