Leading Up to the Day of Hospital Dental Treatment
If your child’s dental surgery is scheduled for the morning, they must begin fasting (no food or drink) after midnight the night before. For afternoon appointments, please ensure your child does not eat anything for a period of eight hours before their scheduled dental surgery.
During this fasting time, your child is only permitted to drink clear liquids such as water, apple juice, black coffee, and electrolyte drinks. Please make sure they do not consume alcohol, orange juice, milk, cream, or any other opaque beverages. Additionally, please ensure your child stops drinking all fluids at least six hours before their surgery time. If you have any doubts about what constitutes a clear liquid or the fasting guidelines, please clarify with us during your child's pre-operative visit.
Day of Surgery
- A parent or legal guardian must be present at the hospital with the patient for the entire duration of their treatment.
- Please refrain from brushing your child's teeth on the day they are having their hospital dental treatment.
- It is important to adhere strictly to the instructions regarding what and when your child can eat and drink before their procedure.
- Kindly ensure that any nail polish is removed from your child's big toenails before their hospital visit.
- You are welcome to bring your child to the hospital in their pajamas, provided they are not the footed kind. This is because we need to attach our monitoring devices to their big toes, which requires their feet to be easily accessible. Please also bring a change of loose and comfortable clothes for them to wear after the surgery.
- After the surgical procedure, your child will be monitored in a recovery room until they meet the criteria for discharge from the hospital.
- If your child develops any illness on the day of their surgery, please inform our office immediately. A cold or fever with congestion in the chest or sinuses can pose risks during surgery, making it essential for us to be aware of their condition. If it is necessary to reschedule, we will contact you promptly.
