Specialized Care for Growing Smiles

Pediatric dentistry (formerly known as Pedodontics) primarily focuses on children from birth through adolescence. The American Dental Association (ADA), recognizes pediatric dentistry as a specialty, and therefore requires dentists to undertake two years of additional training after completing a general dentistry degree. At the end of this training, the Pediatric Dental Residency program issues a Certificate of Pediatric Dentistry. Some Pediatric Dental Residency Programs have an additional requirement of a Masters thesis project. Bowling Green pediatric dentist Dr. Mandy Ashley completed her Pediatric Dental Residency at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and completed her Masters in Science thesis at The Ohio State University. Some pediatric dentists, like Dr. Ashley, opt to provide dental care for children and adults with special needs; including people with autism, varying levels of physical and or mental disability, cerebral palsy, cleft lip and palate or cranio-facial syndrome and other special healthcare needs.
