What is Baby Bottle Tooth Decay?
Baby bottle tooth decay, also known as early childhood caries, refers to cavities that affect infants and toddlers, most commonly the upper front teeth. If untreated, it can lead to severe damage that may require extraction of the affected tooth, followed by the use of a space maintainer to avoid alignment issues.
Regular checkups and proper home care are crucial in preventing baby bottle tooth decay.
How Baby Bottle Tooth Decay Begins
Tooth decay is caused by acid-producing bacteria that thrive in the mouth. These bacteria can be passed from parent to child, especially when parents share utensils or clean pacifiers with their mouths. However, the most common cause of baby bottle tooth decay is the frequent exposure of teeth to sugary liquids like breast milk, baby formula, juice, or sweetened water, especially at bedtime.
When sweet liquids are consumed before naps or bedtime, they stay in the mouth longer, allowing bacteria to feed on the sugars and produce acids that erode tooth enamel, leading to cavities and tooth decay.
Fluoride helps protect tooth enamel, and a pediatric dentist can assess whether your child is at risk for tooth decay or needs fluoride supplements.
Preventing Baby Bottle Tooth Decay at Home
- Avoid sharing utensils or cleaning pacifiers with your mouth.
- Clean your baby's gums with a clean washcloth after each feeding.
- Brush emerging teeth using an appropriate toothbrush with fluoride-free toothpaste (recommended for children under age two).
- Use only a smear-sized amount of toothpaste twice daily.
- Avoid putting sugary drinks in bottles or sippy cups. Stick to water, breast milk, or formula.
- Encourage your child to use a regular cup once they turn twelve months.
- Do not dip pacifiers in sweet substances like honey.
- Offer a balanced diet, avoiding sugary snacks.
- Never allow your child to take a bottle filled with sugary liquid to bed. If needed, only use water.
- Continue to clean your child’s teeth until they are able to do so effectively on their own (around age seven).
