Understanding Bruxism in Children

Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is a common condition seen in both children and adults. Many kids grind their teeth during sleep, although some may also clench or grind during the day. While occasional grinding may not be a concern, frequent or intense bruxism can lead to various dental issues if left untreated.

Why Do Children Grind Their Teeth?

Bruxism in children can result from a variety of psychological, physical, or physiological factors. Some of the most common causes include:
  • Misaligned teeth (bad bite)
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Side effects from certain medications
  • Neurological or developmental conditions
  • Traumatic brain injuries
In many cases, stress-related events such as school exams or moving to a new home can trigger or worsen teeth grinding.

Signs and Symptoms of Bruxism

Since nighttime bruxism often goes unnoticed, parents should watch for signs that may indicate their child is grinding their teeth:
  • Loud grinding or clicking noises during sleep
  • Complaints of headaches, especially in the morning
  • Sore or tight jaw muscles
  • Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold foods
  • Chipped or worn teeth
  • Gum injuries or discomfort in the face or ears
If your child exhibits any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to bring it up at their next dental visit.

How Bruxism Can Affect Your Child’s Oral Health

Teeth grinding can wear down the enamel and cause long-term damage. If left untreated, bruxism can lead to:
  • Chipped or fractured teeth
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Jaw pain and facial discomfort
  • Damage to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
  • Early signs of TMJ disorders
Even if the grinding isn’t audible, a pediatric dentist can often spot wear patterns that signal bruxing behavior.

Treatment Options for Bruxism

Treatment may include:
  • Correcting misalignment with crowns or occlusal adjustments
  • Managing stress through relaxation techniques or therapy
  • Evaluating medications if bruxism may be a side effect
  • Using a custom night guard or bite plate to protect teeth during sleep
Nighttime mouthguards are safe, comfortable, and highly effective in preventing further damage to the teeth.
