Choosing the Right Toothpaste for Your Child

With so many oral care products claiming to be the “best for kids,” picking the right one can feel overwhelming. At Sky Pediatric Dentistry in Glasgow, KY, we know how important it is to find a toothbrush that fits your child’s mouth and a toothpaste that keeps their teeth clean and strong—without causing irritation or harm.

Why Brushing Baby Teeth Matters

Baby (primary) teeth play a bigger role than many parents realize. They help your child speak clearly, chew properly, support healthy jaw growth, and guide adult teeth into the right position. Brushing baby teeth helps prevent cavities, bad breath, plaque buildup, and even early signs of gum disease.

What Makes One Toothpaste Different From Another?

While most children’s toothpastes contain similar base ingredients—such as mild abrasives to scrub away stains, soapy agents to remove plaque, and flavoring to make brushing more enjoyable—there are some important differences to consider:
  • Fluoride levels: Fluoride helps protect teeth, but too much in early childhood can cause dental fluorosis, a condition that affects the enamel. This is most common in children between ages 1 and 4.
  • Texture and flavor: Some kids prefer a gel texture while others like a thick paste. Finding a flavor they enjoy can encourage consistent brushing.
  • Ingredients to avoid: Some toothpastes contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which may cause mouth irritation or ulcers in some children. Adult or non-ADA-approved toothpastes may also include harsh abrasives that can harm baby teeth.
