Post Extraction Care for Your Child’s Tooth Extraction

At Sky Pediatric Dentistry in Glasgow, KY, we understand that tooth extractions can be concerning for both children and parents. While this procedure may be necessary for various reasons such as tooth decay, orthodontic needs, or wisdom teeth removal, the aftercare is just as important as the surgery itself. Follow these guidelines to ensure your child’s healing process is as smooth as possible.

Care Immediately Following Surgery

  • Apply Pressure: Gently bite down on the gauze pad your child’s dentist placed over the extraction site. If it begins to dry, dampen it with water. Maintain pressure for intervals of 45-60 minutes, repeating as necessary, until bleeding lessens. Change the gauze as needed.
  • Keep Your Child Comfortable: Keep your child’s head elevated, and encourage rest while they watch a movie or engage in a quiet activity. Avoid physical activities like sports or running around to allow the blood to clot and form a scab.
  • Keep the Mouth Clean: Brush areas around the surgical site, but avoid touching or picking at the extraction site.
  • Ice Packs: To control swelling, apply ice packs to the facial areas near the extraction site.
  • Medication: Follow the prescribed medication schedule. If you notice any unusual itching or swelling, contact our practice immediately or seek emergency care.
  • Diet: Opt for softer, protein-rich foods and ensure your child stays hydrated with plenty of fluids.

Recovery Timeline

Baby tooth extractions generally heal within a day or two. Permanent tooth extractions may take a few more days. If your child has any underlying health conditions or challenges with wound healing, recovery may take longer. Our team at Sky Pediatric Dentistry will guide you through the healing process step by step.
