Prevent Cavities Before They Start
Fluoride is one of the most effective tools we have to prevent tooth decay in children. It’s a natural mineral found in many foods and water sources—and its cavity-fighting benefits have been well documented for over 50 years by health and dental professionals around the world.
Fluoride protects your child’s teeth in two important ways:
- Topical Fluoride Applied directly to the surface of the teeth, topical fluoride helps strengthen enamel and make teeth more resistant to decay. It’s commonly found in fluoride toothpaste, rinses, gels, and in professional treatments provided during dental checkups.
- Systemic Fluoride This type of fluoride is ingested through water, food, or supplements, and helps strengthen both erupted teeth and those still developing beneath the gums. Supplements may be prescribed in the form of drops or tablets, especially if your child isn’t receiving enough fluoride from drinking water.
Important: Too much fluoride while teeth are still developing can lead to fluorosis—white spots on the enamel—so it’s essential to follow dosage guidelines carefully.
When Are Professional Fluoride Treatments Recommended?
While many kids get some fluoride through their diet and water, your child’s dentist may recommend additional fluoride treatments if they have:
- Deep grooves or pits in their teeth
- Exposed or sensitive roots
- A history of frequent cavities
- Limited fluoride exposure at home
- Dry mouth due to medications or health conditions
- Poor brushing habits or a sugary diet
Fluoride treatments are quick, painless, and typically applied during your child’s routine cleaning appointments.
Fluoride is Just One Part of the Cavity-fighting Equation
Remember, fluoride works best when combined with good oral hygiene habits. Be sure your child:
- Brushes twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Flosses daily
- Eats a balanced diet low in sugary snacks
- Visits the dentist regularly
