Sedation Calms Kids for Dental Procedures
When is Sedation a Helpful Option?
What are the Common Types of Sedation Used in Sky Pediatric Dentistry?
Most pediatric dental offices offer several sedation options, each with its own specific advantages. The dentist will carefully consider the child’s medical history, the anticipated length of the procedure, and the child’s comfort level before recommending a particular sedation method.
Conscious sedation allows children to remain able to communicate, follow instructions, and cooperate throughout the entire procedure. The main methods of conscious sedation are described below:
Nitrous oxide
The pediatric dentist might recommend nitrous oxide (commonly known as “laughing gas”) for children who show noticeable signs of nervousness or anxiety. Nitrous oxide is delivered through a mask placed over the child’s nose. It is always mixed with oxygen, allowing the child to breathe comfortably in through their nose and out through their mouth.
Laughing gas works very quickly to relax children and can create a happy, even euphoric feeling. It is also fast-acting, painless to administer, and its effects wear off within minutes. Before completely removing the mask, the pediatric dentist will administer regular oxygen for several minutes to ensure the nitrous oxide is fully eliminated from the child’s system. In rare cases, nitrous oxide can cause nausea. Because of this, most pediatric dentists advise limiting food intake before the appointment.
Oral sedation

What About General Anesthesia?
- A procedure cannot be performed safely while the child is awake.
- The child has a condition that limits their ability to cooperate or follow instructions.
- The child requires lengthy treatment.
- The child needs more complex dental treatment or oral surgery.
