The Advantages of Digital Dental X-Rays
Digital radiography, or digital X-ray, represents the latest advancement in dental imaging. This technology utilizes an electronic sensor instead of traditional film to capture and store digital images directly onto a computer. These images can be instantly viewed and magnified, allowing our dentists and hygienists to identify potential issues with greater ease. At Sky Pediatric Dentistry, we utilize 21.5 inch Desktop Macs in each treatment room, ideal for viewing these detailed digital X-ray images. Importantly, digital X-rays significantly reduce radiation exposure by 80-90% compared to the already low levels associated with traditional dental X-rays.
Dental X-rays are crucial preventative and diagnostic tools that provide essential information not visible during a routine dental examination. Dentists and hygienists rely on this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities and develop precise treatment plans. Without X-rays, problem areas can easily go unnoticed.
Dental X-rays can reveal:
- Abscesses or cysts
- Bone loss
- Both cancerous and non-cancerous growths
- Decay occurring between teeth
- Developmental irregularities
- Improper tooth and root positioning
- Issues within a tooth or beneath the gum line
Are digital X-Rays safe?
We are all constantly exposed to natural environmental radiation. Digital X-rays produce a considerably lower amount of radiation compared to conventional dental X-rays. Beyond the improved health and safety for our patients, digital X-rays are also quicker and more comfortable, reducing your time spent in our office. Furthermore, because the image capture is electronic, there's no need for chemical processing, eliminating the disposal of harmful waste into the environment.
While digital X-rays emit a low level of radiation and are considered very safe, our dentists still implement necessary precautions to minimize your child’s radiation exposure. These measures include taking only the X-rays that are clinically necessary and using lead apron shields to protect their body.
How often should dental X-rays be taken?
The frequency of dental X-rays needed varies based on each child’s unique dental health requirements. Your dentist and dental hygienist will recommend the appropriate X-rays for your child after reviewing their medical and dental history, conducting a dental examination, and considering any signs, symptoms, their age, and risk of disease.
There isn't a one-size-fits-all recommendation. Dr. Ashley will assess your child's individual risk factors for dental decay and will recommend X-rays based on their specific risk level.
